  • Early 1860's
    San Ramon village development begins. San Ramon becomes accepted name in 1873.
  • 1866
    UC Berkeley founded. Named for Irish philosopher George Berkeley, famous quote " Westward, the course of empire takes its way."
  • March 23, 1868
    Governor Henry Haight signs the Organic Act creating the University of California.
  • Oct. 21, 1868
    Major earthquake on Hayward Fault causes widespread damage.
  • September 23, 1869
    University of California opens with 38 students.
