Homeowner's Property Tax Exemption Claim

Many property taxpayers in Alameda County have recently received a solicitation from a private corporation that charges a processing fee for a service the County Assessor's office performs for free.

A homeowner's property tax exemption that reduces your tax liability by approximately $70 per year is available to all property owners who own and occupy their property as their principal residence. Alameda County Assessor Phong La would like to inform all property owners not currently receiving a homeowner exemption as shown on their latest property tax bill, that a claim form can be obtained without charge by simply calling 272-3770, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

If the easy-to-complete homeowner's exemption claim form is returned to the Assessor on or before February 15 and is approved, the full exemption will be applied to your 2008-09 assessed value. If the claim form is filed after February 15 through December 10, only a partial exemption of approximately $56 can be applied. Unlike the solicitation from the private corporation that charges a processing fee, the Assessor does not charge a fee to obtain and file for this homeowner's property tax exemption.
