EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES

PROMOTIONAL PREFERENCE
Alameda County employees with six months service following regular appointment in the classified service who are competing for promotion and who pass this examination will be given 5% of the maximum score as promotional preference for county service. An additional 3% will be added to the employee's score for vacancies that occur within his/her own department, provided he/she has served six months in that department at the time of certification.

ELIGIBILITY
Names of successful candidates are placed on an eligible list in order of their final scores. Those candidates with the five highest scores who are interested and available are certified and invited to an interview. The department with the vacancy may appoint any one of these candidates. When the next vacancy occurs, the interested and available candidates with the next five highest scores are certified and invited to an interview to fill that vacancy.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION
All prospective county employees must pass a medical examination before beginning employment. For positions which require a commercial driver's license and the performance of functions defined as "safety sensitive", Federal law and County policy requires the examination include a drug screening process. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of this examination. Failure to pass a medical examination may be cause for disqualification, or for withholding of an eligible's name from certification, or for removal of an eligible's name from the employment list.

VERIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY
As mandated by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all candidates offered employment after November 6, 1986 must provide written proof that establishes identity and eligibility to work in the United States. This is accomplished by completing the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) and producing acceptable documents including but not limited to United States Passport; State issued Driver's License; Social Security Card; Birth Certificate; other acceptable documents that establish identity and eligibility to work in the U.S.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
New employees must satisfactorily serve at least a six-month probation period before permanent status is attained. The hiring department can advise prospective employees of the specific period of probation.
