  • How are Polling Places chosen?

Every registered voter in Alameda County has been assigned a precinct by the Registrar of Voters. Once districts are determined for an election, many precincts are consolidated or grouped together for an election. Polling places are selected based on the following criteria:

    • Number of voters in each precinct
    • Number of voters a polling place is able to handle
    • Distance the voter must travel to the polling place
    • Location of the polling place – might it involve crossing busy streets?
    • Accessibility of the polling place to voters with disabilities
    • Complaints received about a polling place
    • Comfort of precincts officers and voters
  • Why does my Polling Place change?

The Registrar of Voters makes every effort to use the same polling places for each election. As noted above, sometimes it is not possible to keep the same polling place. Therefore, it is important that you check the back of your Voter Information Pamphlet for your polling place location.

Possible reasons why your polling place may have changed:

    • Polling place may not have been available for this election.
    • Precinct may have been consolidated differently.
    • Another location was more centralized.
    • Polling place selected for this election may have better access or parking.
    • Complaints about the previous polling place.
    • If you own a garage, recreation room, lobby or some other space that might be usable, please e-mail us at polling.place@acgov.org or call (510) 383-1717.

  • What should I expect when hosting a polling place?

      Equipment Delivery to Your Location
Delivery and pick up of the voting equipment is coordinated with a contracted Alameda County vendor. Delivery and collection of the equipment occurs in a window of 7 days before and 7 days after Election Day. You will be contacted around 28 days before the election to schedule delivery and collection of the equipment.

      Polling Place Operational Hours
Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. Poll workers will arrive on-site at 6:00 a.m. and will usually leave between 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

      Early Set Up
It is helpful to allow the poll workers to set up the night prior to Election Day. You will have an opportunity to become acquainted with the group of poll workers who will be participating on Election Day. In addition, this will allow pressure to be relieved from poll workers from having to set-up early on Election Day.

      Compensation
You will be compensated $35.00 for the use of your business or home, plus an additional $15.00 for use of an appropriate table and 4 chairs. This is also a satisfying way to make a real difference in the lives of the hundreds of thousands of voters who use the polls each election.

Polling Places are needed throughout Alameda County.
