February 6, 1856 County seat moves to San Leandro. The county seat moved from Alvarado to San Leandro on February 6, 1856. A new permanent brick courthouse (seen in the photograph to the right) is built. The courthouse collapsed in 1868 due to a very large earthquake on the Hayward fault. The courthouse was rebuilt and used until 1873 when the county seat moved to Oakland. |
