THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL BI-WEEKLY COMPENSATION FOR PERSONS IN POSITIONS DESIGNATED BILINGUAL.
THE POSITION(S): Deputy Probation Officer III is the advanced journey-level classification within the Deputy Probation Officer series in the Probation Department. Incumbents appointed to this classification perform investigative and supervisory work with juveniles and adults to aid in their social rehabilitation. Their work includes making recommendations to the courts, supervising probationers, and counseling boys and girls at the County residential treatment facilities. There is a further requirement for the highest degree of independent judgment and skill in the performance of assignments. Incumbents may act as a lead worker for unit assignments as directed by the Department; and act as substitute full-time court officers in the Adult and Juvenile Services Division. Deputy Probation Officer III's must be available to work all shifts and locations and must be willing to perform work requiring irregular hours, holidays and weekends. Deputy Probation Officers arrest clients who violate the law and terms of Probation and physically restrain clients.
THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates.
EITHER I
EXPERIENCE: One year of full-time experience in the class of Deputy Probation Officer II in the Alameda County service.
OR II
EDUCATION: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university in one of the behavioral sciences or in a closely related field. (Official college transcripts must be attached to the application. Failure to submit transcripts will result in disqualification.)
AND
EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of four years of professional, full-time correctional casework experience in a probation or parole agency or correctional institution comparable in type and level of work to that of Deputy Probation Officer II in the Alameda County service. (Written verification on letterhead verifying employment and detailed description of duties and responsibilities must be attached to the application.)
LICENSE: All candidates must possess a valid California Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Good driving record according to DMV negligent operator guidelines and qualifications for automotive insurance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet all minimum standards for Peace Officer under Section 1031 of the Government Code which includes: must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Persons appointed must be citizens of the United States or have applied for citizenship one year prior to submission of application for employment. Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. Any felony conviction is disqualifying. Within the prescribed time limit after date of appointment, satisfactory completion of training for Probation Officers as specified by the California Board of Corrections, Peace Officer Standards and training PC 832 and any other training required under law.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must satisfactorily pass a thorough medical examination for Peace Officers and a psychological evaluation before job placement can take place. Employees currently employed in the Alameda County Probation Department who hold a Peace Officer classification will not have to complete psychological evaluation in order to be eligible for appointment.
THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW CONTINUOUS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel the current list and will last approximately one year, but may be extended. This examination may be reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates merged onto the existing list according to examination score.The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF cause of crime and delinquency; elementary psychodynamics of behavior and modes of adjustment; intermediate and basic math; principles of supervision; applicable State, Federal and local statutes, ordinances, rules, policies, codes and their interrelationship; training and learning theory techniques, including recreational activity; principles, methods, procedures and facilities used in modern progressive correctional programs including methods of social casework; cultural relativity and differences; concepts and techniques in facilitating socio-cultural relationships; social economic and psychological factors, forces and trends relating to crime, delinquency, and social adjustment; developmental theory and social theory relating to rehabilitation; counseling and guidance principles of normal and abnormal psychology and personality theory; theory, principles and trends of probation work; principles, techniques and trends in social and correctional case and group work; general provisions of the law relating to the legal rights and obligations of adult and juveniles; causes, extent of crime and delinquency; techniques and methods of investigating and supervising adult and juvenile offenders; service of public and private agencies available to probationers; organization and procedures of the Alameda County Probation Department; operation of Municipal and Superior Courts. ABILITY TO communicate verbally with people from various ethnic, educational and socio-economic backgrounds; speak in public; prepare materials for oral presentations; interview effectively; communicate in writing; define problems, collect information and draw conclusions; read and interpret complex technical, legal and/or medical documents, codes and rules; organize and manage a caseload; be flexible; work under stress; demonstrate interpersonal sensitivity and establish rapport with clients and co-workers; restrain individual for purposes of arrest and/or detention and conduct related searches; apply restrain devices; administer first aid and CPR.
The examination will consist of the following steps: A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. The remaining steps in the exam process and the weight assigned to each step are yet to be determined. Candidates will be notified of these prior to commencement of the examination.
