A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

THE POSITION(S): Deputy Sheriff is a peace officer class characterized by a wide variety of duties assigned to different positions. Deputy Sheriff's I are trained in law enforcement knowledge and skills and may be rotated among posts in the courts, jails, correction facilities, the Coroner's Bureau, patrol districts and investigation according to Department needs. Deputy Sheriff's I are expected to demonstrate craft, technical and clerical skills necessary to plant maintenance, recordkeeping and rehabilitation aspects of departmental functions; however, these at all times are subordinate to the fundamental law enforcement and custodial nature of the work. Deputy Sheriff's, as assigned, will supervise groups of prisoners on work details.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Upon successful completion of an 18 month probationary period, Deputy Sheriff I may advance to:

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates.

EITHER I

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a certified P.O.S.T. approved basic academy by December 15, 1999.

OR II

EXPERIENCE: Current full time employment as a Peace Officer in a California law enforcement agency for a minimum of twelve (12) months (municipality, Sheriff, Highway Patrol); AND
CERTIFICATE: Possession of certificate of completion from a certified P.O.S.T. approved basic academy.

LICENSE: All candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

AGE: Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.

CITIZENSHIP: Candidates who are not citizens of the United States must have filed for citizenship at least one year before applying for Deputy Sheriff I.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Hearing must be normal in each ear. Vision must be at least 20/70 in both eyes without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses and free from color blindness and permanent abnormality in either eye. Applicants must be in excellent physical condition with above average strength, endurance and agility, and must meet Commission approved safety member physical standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Federal law and County policy requires that certain positions in the class of Deputy Sheriff I/II which require a commercial driver's license and the performance of duties defined as "safety sensitive" are subject to post-offer/ pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing. A Computer Voice Stress Analyzer exam will also be included in the process to assess candidates' responses in the areas of drug use, driving history, honesty, racial discrimination, and sexual harassment. Any felony conviction will result in disqualification.

THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW CONTINUOUS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will last approximately one year but may be extended. This examination may be reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates merged onto the existing list according to examination score.

The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF law enforcement techniques; court procedures; laws, codes and statutes; ability to read and interpret technical documents. ABILITY TO write clear and concise reports; communicate clearly and concisely; use good judgment in critical situations; exert physical force in the apprehension of suspects and in the saving of lives and property.

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following four steps (each step in the selection procedure is qualifying): 1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. 2) A review of candidate's Supplemental Questionnaires to verify further knowledge, skill or ability. 3) A performance examination which will be qualifying only. 4) An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. This score will be used for placement on the eligible list. The oral interview may include situational exercises. Candidates who successfully place on the eligible list and are reachable will participate in the remaining components: 1) Background Investigation: a record of any felony conviction will result in disqualification. 2) Psychological Evaluation. 3) Computer Voice Stress Analyzer Exam. 4) Medical Evaluation.
