THE POSITION(S): The Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor is assigned in the Emergency Dispatch Center at the Sheriff’s Department and works as shift supervisor. This position works various shifts, holidays and weekends. Duties include assuming full operational responsibility for the Emergency Dispatch Center on an assigned shift; investigating and resolving service or personnel-related complaints; training, assigning, reviewing and evaluating work of assigned staff; reporting repair needs of equipment; supervising the maintenance of complete radio logs; and compiling and preparing detailed reports. The Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor may serve as a dispatcher as needed, and performs other related duties as assigned.

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates.

EITHER I

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of three years of full-time experience in the class of Emergency Services Dispatcher II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

OR II

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of four years of full-time journey-level dispatching experience with a public safety agency.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Normal hearing in each ear. Ability to type 25 net words per minute.

THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW CONTINUOUS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will last approximately one year but may be extended. This examination may be reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates merged onto the existing list according to examination score.

The examination may include but may not be limited to: Knowledge of methods, policies and operations of the dispatch center and functions; public safety radio communications; the operation of complex radio and telephone equipment; location of the highways, main streets, major buildings and geography of Alameda County; regulations of the Federal Communications Commission regarding radio telephone operations. AbilitY TO: write and communicate effectively; make decisions; analyze and problem-solve; plan and organize work; manage and lead staff; possess interpersonal sensitivity; be flexible and adapt to stress.

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following two steps: A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process, an oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
