Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

THE POSITION(S): The class of Land Surveyor is the first level of the professional Land Surveyor classifications exercising the independent control and direction of land surveying work and land surveying decisions which can only be made by a licensed Land Surveyor. Certain positions in this class may be responsible for assigning, monitoring and reviewing the work of multiple survey parties within one of the Division's major specialized survey activities such as Global Positioning System (GPS) Surveys, Boundary Determinations, and in the examination of record maps in the County Surveyor Section.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Land Surveyor may advance by competitive examination to:

Associate Land Surveyor - $2709.60 - Current Bi-Weekly Maximum

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates.

EITHER I

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of two years full-time experience in the class of Survey Technician III in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

OR II

EDUCATION: Two years of college level course work in math and science that included algebra and trigonometry, AND

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of six years of full-time land surveying experience that included at least two years of preparing or reviewing record boundary documents such as records of survey, corner records, right-of-way maps or property descriptions.

LICENSE: All candidates must possess a valid current license as a Land Surveyor from the State of California and a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will last approximately one year, but may be extended.

The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF fundamentals and laws governing survey theory and practice regarding preliminary designs, construction, right-of way engineering, land division, boundary location, control and geodetic surveying; federal and state regulations, such as the Subdivision Act, Land Surveyors Act and other local ordinances, as they relate to the preparation and examination of record documents including final maps, parcel maps and records or survey; survey equipment and computer software used in land survey office work; sources of general engineering and/or land survey information; safety procedures pertaining to survey work. ABILITY TO perform technical office and/or field surveys; prepare and review the work of assigned survey staff; communicate orally and in writing explaining complex technical and legal surveying and property boundary issues to attorneys, colleagues and the public; process subdivision, parcel and record of survey maps; read and interpret drawings, maps and documents related to land surveying; follow oral and written instructions; adhere to performance standards; work harmoniously as a member of survey team and with the public; write clear and concise reports and letters to other professionals, agencies and the public; operate a computer to calculate and plot survey information in the office; perform extensive physical work in all kinds of terrain and weather.

The examination will consist of the following two steps: A review of candidates' applications and Supplemental Questionnaires to select the best qualified candidates who will move on to the next step in the examination process, which is an oral interview weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE CHANGES TO ANNOUNCED EXAMINATION STEPS.
