Applications must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services
Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted.
THE POSITION(S): Public Works Inspectors perform responsible field
work in inspecting, road, highway, street, water supply, water conservation, or
flood control construction and repairs; enforcing compliance with plans and
specifications on a variety of construction projects; and do related work as
required. Public Works Inspector classes are found only in the Public Works
Agency. The vacancy is in the Development Services Department of the Agency.
Public Works Inspector III are advanced-journey level inspectors and are
regularly responsible for projects more complex than those generally assigned
to Public Works Inspectors II. Incumbents of this class are assigned projects
that require a higher level of expertise; to coordinate and supervise other
projects being inspected by lesser experienced inspectors and to train lesser
experienced inspectors to effectively deal with unusual projects and projects
that require special attention to detail; and to do related work as required.

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to
the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements
does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the
examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other
candidates.
EITHER I
EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of two years of full-time experience as a
Public Works Inspector II in the Alameda County classified service.
(Non-classified includes District Attorneys Office, Hospital Authority,
and the Consolidated Courts.)
OR II
EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of five years of full-time construction
inspection experience at the journey level.
OR III
EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of four years of full-time construction
inspection experience at the journey level and one year of surveying and/or
materials testing, and completion of a plane surveying course or equivalent
experience. (A Certificate of Achievement of Public Works Inspection at the
college level may be substituted for one year of experience.)
LICENSE: All candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle
Operator's license.
THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible
list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will
last approximately one year, but may be extended.
The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF
surveying, engineering and construction practices, and basic design criteria,
construction materials and testing procedures associated with them; OSHA
regulations and ability to enforce them; knowledge of basic principles of
supervision. ABILITY TO read and interpret plans and specifications;
keep accurate material quantity and construction progress records; communicate
with contractors and other agencies in performance of duties; recognize problem
areas and how to go about resolving them; adapt to a variety of different types
of work and be able to effectively inspect more than one project at any one
time; work independently with a minimum amount of supervision; negotiate and
resolve change order situations on a project; complete and process required
fiscal forms for contract payments.
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following three steps: A review
of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those
candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to
the next steps in the examination process, a written test which will be
weighted as 50% of the candidates final examination score and an oral
interview which will be weighted as 50% of the candidate's final examination
score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. CANDIDATES MUST
ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION. WE RESERVE THE
RIGHT TO MAKE CHANGES TO ANNOUNCED EXAMINATION STEPS.
