A properly completed Supplemental
Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and
Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource
Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not
accepted. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in
disqualification.
QUALIFIED BILINGUAL PERSONS ARE ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY. THERE IS AN
ADDITIONAL BI-WEEKLY COMPENSATION FOR PERSONS IN POSITIONS DESIGNATED
BILINGUAL.
THE POSITION(S): This is the entry level position in the professional
librarian series. Librarians I assist adults, young adults, and children in
finding specific information and personal reading resources; assist patrons in
the use of web-based and CD-ROM reference resources; classify and catalog
library materials; and assist in collection development. The Librarian I
eligible list will be used to fill full-time, part-time and services-as-needed
positions.
PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Librarian I is a flexibly staffed position
and may advance after a satisfactory probationary period to: Librarian II -
$1791.25 - Current Bi-weekly Maximum
THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to
the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements
does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the
examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other
candidates.
EITHER I
EDUCATION: Possession of a Master's Degree in Library Science awarded
by a school of librarianship accredited by the American Library Association.
OR II
EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of two years of full-time experience as a Library
Assistant II in the Alameda County Library system.
THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible
list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will
last approximately one year, but may be extended.
The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF
contemporary principles and practices of librarianship including bibliographic
entry, reference work and cataloging; public library programs and their
relationship to community needs; books, periodicals in general use, CD-Roms,
on-line reference and bibliographic sources and reference books and common
indexing services; electronic information sources; library business methods,
practices and procedures. ABILITY TO analyze patrons' information needs and
help them in the choice of books and library materials; direct the reading
interests of children and young adults; work harmoniously and effectively with
the public and staff members; classify and catalog library materials; give
presentations on the library and library materials and resources to diverse
patron groups.
THE EXAMINATION MAY CONSIST OF the following steps: A review of
candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those
candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to
the next step in the examination process, a screening of applications and/or
Supplemental Questionnaires to select the best qualified candidates who will
move on to the next step in the examination process. The remaining steps in the
exam process and the weight assigned to each step are yet to be determined.
Candidates will be notified of these prior to commencement of the examination.
