A properly completed Supplemental
Questionnaire must be submitted with each application.
Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the
Human Resource Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.
Postmarks are not accepted. Applicants must submit an official law school
transcript (with explanation of grades) for each law school attended with the
application. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire or the law school
transcript will result in disqualification.
QUALIFIED BILINGUAL PERSONS WHO SPEAK ENGLISH AND ARE ALSO FLUENT IN
SPANISH, CHINESE, VIETNAMESE, CAMBODIAN, LAOTIAN, KOREAN, MIEN, TAGALOG,
AMHARIC, FARSI, DARI, TIGRIGNA, RUSSIAN, ROMANIAN OR SIGN LANGUAGE ARE
ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY. THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL BI-WEEKLY COMPENSATION
FOR PERSONS IN POSITIONS DESIGNATED BILINGUAL.
THE POSITION(S): Associate Deputy Public Defenders are entrance level
criminal litigation attorney positions in the Public Defender's Office. Typical
duties include providing legal counsel and defense to clients in criminal and
juvenile cases; representing litigants in certain civil proceedings and
performing all related legal work as required.
PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Associate Deputy Public Defenders may
advance by supervisory evaluation to: Deputy Public Defender - $4155.20 -
Current Bi-Weekly Maximum
THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to
the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements
does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the
examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other
candidates.
LICENSE: Current, active membership and good standing with the State
Bar of California is required (indicate license number on front of
application). All candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicles
drivers license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: PLEASE NOTE --- You must provide the
Public Defender's Office with an Official Law School Transcript.
THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible
list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will
last approximately one year, but may be extended.
The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF
of philosophy and practice of public defense in the United States; laws,
ethics, and policies governing the Public Defender's Office; legal principles
and procedures followed in the handling of criminal and juvenile cases,
including rules of evidence, trial litigation, and appellate procedure; scope
and character of California statutory and constitutional law; legal source
materials. ABILITY TO analyze situations accurately and adopt an
effective course of action; gather, analyze, and apply legal data an evidence;
present legal arguments effectively in oral and written form; inspire
confidence in clients and work effectively with colleagues and representatives
of other agencies; handle legal correspondence and procedures with tact and
accuracy; make sound decisions; demonstrate flexibility and interpersonal
sensitivity in working with a diverse population and personnel; perform in a
stressful environment.
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following three steps: A review
of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those
candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to
the next step in the examination process, a screening of applications and/or
Supplemental Questionnaires to select the best qualified candidates who will
move on to the next steps in the examination process, which is an oral
interview weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral
interview may contain situational exercises.
