Supplemental Questionnaire
Your application for this examination must include a properly completed
Supplemental Questionnaire as follows, and an official law school transcript,
with explanation of grading system used, for each law school you attended. All
Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the
Alameda County Human Resource Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day
for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted. Failure to prepare an include the
Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification. Failure to submit
law school transcripts will result in disqualification.
The function of the supplemental Questionnaire is to provide a format
wherein each applicant is to describe and document his or her general
suitability for this position, to identify and discuss his or her relevant
aptitudes, attributes, qualifications, and experience, to list references, and
to append letters of reference. The screening panel will review all
applications, responses, and submissions from the candidates who meet minimum
requirements. References and letters of reference may be considered in scoring
applicants' responses to each relevant Part. Only the best qualified applicants
will be asked to continue in the examination process. Not all qualified
applicants will pass the initial screening. Careful, accurate, and thorough
answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire are essential. Meeting or exceeding
the minimum requirements for this examination does not guarantee advancement in
the selection process.

PAPER. Print your name at the top of each page. Assemble your application
in the following order:
- Alameda County Human Resource Services Department application form;
- Official law school transcripts, with explanation of grading system used,
for each law school you attended;
- Your responses to this Supplemental Questionnaire, labeled and organized in
the order indicated, including your list of references (do not attach the
Supplemental Questionnaire itself);
- You may also include letters of reference, a resume and/or any other
documents (not to exceed a total of four pages) that you believe the screening
panel might find helpful in evaluating your application.

LAW SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT; PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY & STANDARDS
- Law School Achievement
Use this section to discuss special law school honors, academic achievement in
relevant courses, or otherwise. You may explain why your law school record does
or does not demonstrate your potential as a diligent, effective and resourceful
criminal defense attorney. You should also use this section to explain any
delay or more than one year between receiving a law degree and your admission
to the California Bar.
- Professional Responsibility and Standards
In a concise statement, set forth your view of the appropriate ethical and
professional standards that should be observed by a Public Defender. Indicate
any information that you want the screening committee to consider that bears on
your ethical and professional standards. If you have ever been the subject of
any State Bar disciplinary investigation or disciplinary proceedings, describe
the situation fully, indicating whether such investigation or proceedings are
still pending, or have resulted in censure (private or public reproval) or in
any other disciplinary action. Explain any "yes" answer to the
question on the application form; "Were you ever discharged or forced to
resign from any position?"

WORK HISTORY; LITIGATION APTITUDE, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
CRIMINAL LAW TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
- Non-Law Work History
List your work history outside the practice of law, by time period, and
summarize the nature of your work experience. Explain any gaps in your
employment history.
- General Law Practice
List your law employment experience, by time period, and describe the nature of
your practice. Explain any gaps in your employment history.
- General Litigation Aptitude / Training / Experience
List and describe all of your actual litigation experience (other than any
criminal litigation experience, below), including any jury or court trials,
depositions, administrative hearings, or any other courtroom forensic advocacy.
List and describe all advocacy training, other than criminal advocacy training
(below), in which you have examined witnesses or advocated legal or factual
positions. Describe in sufficient detail any formal training or hands-0n
experience, advocacy or otherwise, that has helped to prepare you to be an
effective courtroom advocate or demonstrates your general aptitude for and
skill in litigation advocacy.
Describe any other aspects of your experience that may show an aptitude for
litigation. Your answer may include public speaking, sales, negotiations,
acting, and other interpersonal advocacy. You may also discuss any occasions --
whether or not in an employment context -- in which you have been called upon
to use your powers of persuasion or skills in oral presentation in a setting
where the outcome was important to a third party.
- Criminal Law Training and Experience
List and describe all education, special clinics or training in the field of
criminal practice, listing all relevant formal courses of study (i.e., criminal
procedure, constitutional law, evidence, immigration law, etc., and training
exercises (i.e., criminal trial advocacy, criminal law moot court, criminal
practice MCLE courses, etc.).
Describe your actual experience in criminal practice. Specifically describe any
criminal courtroom experience. Supply as much detail as you want the committee
to consider.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES; SUITABILITY FOR PUBLIC DEFENSE PRACTICE
- Not every desirable attribute of a good Public Defender can be
captured in a profile of work experience, professional and academic history.
Use this section to set out, in appropriate narrative detail, any valuable
attributes, life experience and special knowledge that you would bring to this
position; you may describe any aspect of your personal or professional
background, character, abilities, life experience, or special motivation
relevant to your suitability for this position. You may discuss why you want to
practice criminal defense law, and describe your aptitude for and/or
experiences dealing with an indigent, ethnically diverse client population. If
you are fluent in any foreign language(s) likely to be in the Public Defender
client population, or have any other special expertise relevant to the needs of
a criminal defense office, you should describe your special abilities in
detail. If there are any other special personal attributes, abilities, or life
experiences that you believe would make you an asset to this law office, that
is the place to discuss them in as much depth as space permits.
PART IV: LIST OF REFERENCES (Respond on One Page)
- List three or more references, providing current addresses and
daytime telephone numbers. At least one reference should relate to your current
or recent employment. All of your references shield be prepared to discuss your
legal ability, work habits, character, and suitability for this position.
The screening panel reserves the right to contact logical references not
listed by you in this application. As indicated on the application form,
inquiry may be made of your former employers. Your present
employer will not be contacted without your consent; however, if you still
wish your current employment to be considered in support of this application,
you must then provide an alternative reference.
