Water-wise landscaping at the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center is part of the County's commitment to Bay-Friendly landscaping practices.

Bay-Friendly Landscaping

Conserving water and preventing water pollution were two of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors' top concerns when it passed a Bay-Friendly Landscaping Policy in 2008 that requires using Bay-Friendly landscaping practices at County facilities. Bay-Friendly landscaping is a holistic approach to landscaping that works with the natural conditions of the San Francisco Bay Watershed. Bay-Friendly practices foster soil health, and conserve water and other valuable resources while reducing waste and preventing pollution.

Water-wise landscaping using drought-tolerant plants and drip irrigation is already in place at a number of County facilities. For example, water-wise landscaping at the Juvenile Justice Center uses up to 50% less water than conventional landscaping.
