The National Organic Program and the California Organic Products Act of 2003 define where agricultural products can be grown, what products can be used to control pests, what fertilizers can be used, how to handle the commodity to prevent contamination, what records to keep, and other requirements. Organic producers, handlers, and retailers are inspected for compliance with these regulations. Spot inspections are conducted to assess the operations compliance with all applicable requirements of the organic standards including recordkeeping and labeling. These inspections assure consumers that they can be confident in their purchase of organic produce.
